Chernobyl
25 years ago, the 26th april 1986, the 4th reactor of the number 4 powerplant of Chernobyl explodes, sending billions of radioactive particles into the atmosphere.
Two nuclear accidents only are classified 7 on the INES scale : Fukushima in 2011, and Chernobyl, which human, geographical and biological consequences will last thousand years.
The Lenin central in Chernobyl lies at the north Belarus border in Ukraine, at about 15 km from the Chernobyl city. In 1970 when the powerplant was built, a new town is erected at 3 km, to house the staff and their families : the 50 000 inhabitants of Pripyat, an Òatom cityÓ dedicated to a non military nuclear energy.
Nuclear reactors are built two by two. The 1 and 2 powerplants were activated in 1977 and 1978 ; the 3 and 4 reactors are started in 1981 and in 1983. The construction of the 5 and 6 reactors is stopped by the accident.
The three reactors left after the accident were nevertheless restarted in late 1986 after having been cleaned ; the last of then still running, the reactor number 3, operated until year 2000, even though there have been several incidents and a huge pressure from the European Community.
